Regional economic inequality in Egypt: A Kuznets curve, convergence, or shock-driven decline?

Hussein Suleiman and Yilin Chen March 1, 2026
Inequality & disparitiesRegional convergence & clubs

This paper measures inter-provincial inequality in Egypt from 1992 to 2022 using Gini and Theil indices, tests the Williamson-Kuznets hypothesis alongside sigma, beta, and club convergence, and examines the causal effects of structural-adjustment and COVID-19 shocks. It finds an inverted-U inequality path, no overall beta convergence (only club convergence), and a temporary shock-driven decline followed by renewed increases.
